Tamiami is a west Miami-Dade suburb named for the trail that runs through it — SW 8th Street is the old Tamiami Trail. The Turnpike crosses its eastern side. Tamiami is a long strip along 8th Street, so distance matters: ‘Tamiami at 107th’ and ‘Tamiami at 157th’ are miles apart. When you call, give the avenue number first — it tells dispatch which end of the strip you are on.

The long end of 8th Street

By the time SW 8th Street reaches Tamiami it has become the Tamiami Trail proper — a wide commercial corridor running west toward Krome Avenue and the edge of the Everglades. Calls along this stretch benefit from the avenue number more than anything: 8th Street at 107th is a different run than 8th Street at 157th. If you are near the far west end where the grid thins out, the last intersection you passed is the reference dispatch wants.
